Effects of Sulfation on OPzV Battery Performance

Sulfation of the plates in OPzV batteries significantly impacts their overall performance and life cycle. Irreversible sulfation limits the active surface area of the plates, which in turn reduces the capacity of the battery. The key effects of this issue include:

  • Decreased Capacity: As sulfate crystals accumulate, the surface area of the active material decreases, resulting in a reduction in the battery’s ability to hold a charge.
  • Increased Internal Resistance: Sulfation increases the battery’s internal resistance, which leads to inefficient charging, higher heat generation, and lower overall efficiency.
  • Voltage Drop: With sulfate buildup, the voltage of the battery may drop more quickly under load, and it will struggle to deliver the necessary power.

Sulfation is irreversible once it reaches a certain point, and at that stage, the battery’s performance declines rapidly, requiring replacement.
