Installation and Handling

  1. Correct Orientation: Always install GEL batteries in an upright position to avoid unnecessary pressure on internal components. Though GEL batteries are sealed and spill-proof, it’s best to adhere to manufacturer guidelines for installation.
  2. Adequate Ventilation: Although GEL batteries are sealed, they can still produce gas during overcharge conditions. Make sure they are installed in a well-ventilated area to prevent gas buildup, which can pose safety risks.
  3. Temperature Control: GEL batteries perform optimally at temperatures between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures—whether too hot or too cold—can shorten their lifespan. It’s best to avoid direct sunlight or freezing conditions during operation or storage.

Charging Procedures

  1. Use the Right Charger: Always use a charger designed for GEL lead-acid batteries. Using a standard lead-acid battery charger may result in improper charging, leading to battery damage or reduced performance. The charger should include multi-stage charging algorithms to ensure a full charge and protect the battery from overcharging.
  2. Avoid Deep Discharge: While GEL batteries are designed for deep cycling, completely discharging the battery regularly can still shorten its life. It’s advisable to avoid discharging below 50% of the battery’s capacity whenever possible.
  3. Monitor Voltage Levels: Regularly check the battery voltage, especially during heavy use. GEL batteries should be charged when the voltage drops below 12.0V for 12V systems. If a battery remains discharged for too long, it may suffer from permanent capacity loss.
