Nickel-cadmium batteries have faced significant criticism due to cadmium’s toxicity, leading to strict recycling mandates in the EU and other regions. However, when properly managed, Ni-Cd batteries can be part of a sustainable energy ecosystem.
Recycling Ni-Cd batteries recovers up to 95% of the cadmium and nickel, which can be reused in new batteries. In contrast, lithium-ion battery recycling is still in its infancy, with lower recovery rates for critical materials like cobalt and lithium.
Despite these recycling advantages, the environmental risks of cadmium leakage remain a concern. Many industries are transitioning to greener alternatives, but for applications where reliability and longevity outweigh environmental concerns—such as aviation and emergency backup systems—Ni-Cd batteries continue to play a vital role.
