During extended cloudy or rainy periods, lead-acid batteries in solar systems may discharge deeply, risking permanent damage. While they can recover from mild discharge, repeated deep cycles without full recharging degrade them faster.
Sulfation becomes irreversible if batteries remain undercharged for weeks. Flooded batteries may benefit from an equalization charge, but sealed types (AGM/Gel) have limited recovery options.
Recovery Strategies:
- Recharge batteries promptly using a grid or generator backup.
- Perform an equalization charge (for flooded batteries).
- Avoid discharging below 50% State of Charge (SoC).
