Ni-Cd vs NiMH: Choosing the Right Battery for Demanding Applications

Nickel-Cadmium and Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries both serve as rechargeable energy storage systems, but they differ in performance characteristics and ideal use cases.

NiMH batteries offer higher energy density and are more environmentally friendly due to the absence of toxic cadmium. However, they are more sensitive to temperature and have a higher self-discharge rate.

Ni-Cd batteries shine in harsh environments, tolerate overcharging and deep discharging better, and generally offer longer cycle life. These attributes make them well-suited for industrial, military, and aerospace applications.

Choosing between Ni-Cd and NiMH depends on application needs: for long-term durability in extreme conditions, Ni-Cd remains superior.
