Understanding the Working Principle of Gel Lead-Acid Batteries for Energy Storage

Gel lead-acid batteries are a specialized form of Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) batteries. They incorporate a silica-based gelling agent that immobilizes the sulfuric acid electrolyte, converting it into a gel-like substance. This unique construction provides significant advantages in terms of safety, longevity, and performance, particularly in energy storage applications.

In these batteries, the chemical reaction between lead dioxide (PbO2) and sponge lead (Pb) in the presence of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) produces electrical energy. The immobilized electrolyte prevents leakage and reduces the risk of acid stratification, which commonly occurs in flooded batteries. Moreover, the gel structure enhances deep-cycle performance and allows the battery to be mounted in various orientations.
