Why Ni-Cd Batteries Still Dominate Emergency Backup Systems?

In critical infrastructure such as hospitals, data centers, and telecommunications, uninterrupted power supply is paramount. Nickel-cadmium batteries have been the go-to choice for emergency backup systems for decades, and for good reason.

Ni-Cd batteries excel in standby applications due to their low self-discharge rate (around 10-20% per month), which ensures they remain operational even after prolonged storage. They also handle deep discharges better than lead-acid batteries, making them more reliable during prolonged power outages.

Another major advantage is their durability in harsh environments. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which degrade quickly in high temperatures, Ni-Cd batteries can operate efficiently in a wide range of conditions, from -40°C to 60°C. This makes them ideal for remote telecom towers and industrial backup systems where maintenance is infrequent.

While lithium-ion batteries are making inroads due to their higher energy density, Ni-Cd batteries remain preferred in mission-critical applications where failure is not an option.
