Maintenance-free lead-acid batteries, also known as sealed lead-acid (SLA) batteries or valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries, are designed to be sealed and do not require the addition of water or electrolyte during their lifespan. They are often used in applications where regular maintenance is impractical or not possible, such as in uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), emergency lighting, and solar power systems.

There are two main types of maintenance-free lead-acid batteries:

  1. Gel Cell Batteries: These batteries use a gel electrolyte that is immobilized within the battery, preventing spillage even if the battery is damaged. This design allows for a higher power density and faster recharge rates compared to traditional flooded lead-acid batteries. AGM batteries are commonly used in automotive applications, as well as in UPS systems and renewable energy systems.

Overall, maintenance-free lead-acid batteries offer the advantage of reduced maintenance requirements and improved safety compared to traditional lead-acid batteries. However, they may have a higher initial cost and may not be suitable for all applications.
